All about Trex Decking
History
In 1988, Roger Wittenberg combined sawdust and plastic bags to create a park bench. In 1996, Mobil Chemical Co. acquired Wittenberg's technology and formed Trex, LLC. Trex is widely considered to be one of the inventors of composite decking made from recyclable materials. Since 1996 Trex has invented, defined and perfected the composite deck category, becoming the world's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products.
Why Trex
Timber decks can be beautiful, but they don’t stay that way for very long, requiring extensive upkeep to maintain their looks and safe qualities. Trex® composite decking, on the other hand, was designed to mimic the beauty of timber decking but without all of the maintenance hassles. The high-performance, eco-friendly composite decking withstands years of sun, sleet and snow, keeping its rich colour and durability for decades. When comparing composite decking vs. timber, there’s really no competition. Whereas Trex is low-maintenance and durable, timber decks: Rot, split, swell, twist and fade Crack from insect infestation. Require annual painting, staining or sealing. Splinter easily Contribute to deforestation.
While most of the raw materials used in making Trex are recycled, these materials are carefully processed to ensure the highest level of quality and performance. The end result is decking that performs better than timber, lowering your cost over time through reduced maintenance.
Trex decking is made from up to 95% recycled materials, including reclaimed sawdust and recycled plastic from many common household items, such as the plastic packaging for paper towels and toilet paper as well as dry cleaning bags, and shopping/carrier bags. Since its inception, Trex has recycled over 2 billion kilograms of plastic film and become one of North America's largest recyclers.
Trex® Protect
We use Trex Protect tape on all our decks.
Trex® Protect tape is a self-adhesive butyl tape designed to protect the top of your timber joist or beam. This prevents moisture ingress that can lead to joist rot and loosening deck screws and fasteners.
Trex® RainEscape®
Trex RainEscape is an above the joist drainage system.
Systems installed above the joist provide 100% protection of the deck substructure from moisture penetration.
